Wildfires burning in New Jersey have led the New York State Departments of Health and DEC to issue an Air Quality Health Advisory for the entire Long Island region (Nassau & Suffolk) from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 25. The pollutant of concern is fine particulate matter (PM 2.5).
DEC’s forecast lists a maximum Air Quality Index of 101 (“Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups”) for Long Island during the advisory window. Conditions could fluctuate, especially if wind speed or direction shifts later in the day.
In addition, The State DEC has issued a Statewide Outdoor Burn Ban due to the continued dry conditions. This ban on open outdoor fires will be in effect through May 14th, 2025.

The smoke is coming from the Jones Road Wildfire burning in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area of Ocean County, N.J. The fire ignited on April 22, has scorched roughly 15,000 acres, and was about 50 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon.
