Earlier today, the Secretary of the Interior ordered Equinor to Stop all work on the Empire Wind Turbine Project currently being constructed in Federal Waters south of Point Lookout. NY Govenor Hochul has vowed to fight the Federal order to halt work, but at least for now construction will remain suspended and the 53 Turbines will not be constructed south of our beaches for the foreseeable future.

Despite the Trump Administrations recent executive order banning new federal offshore wind leases, Norway-based Equinor had recently begun construction, citing that their permits and leases were approved prior to the executive order. Today’s order from the Interior Department seems to make clear that this project will not be moving forward in its current form in the near future.

Key points to note:

  • Visibility: At 951 feet high, the turbines were expected to be visible from shore under most weather and maritime conditions, confirmed by Equinor representatives.  The tops of each Turbine will contain several FAA strobe lights, for air traffic safety.
  • Local Impact: Concerns persist regarding potential negative impacts on marine life, commercial fishing, and maritime navigation. The Long Island Commercial Fishing Association has raised significant concerns about the project’s implications for local fisheries.  Concerns exist regarding the contracted price for electricity sold by this project being far more expensive than conventional power generated on Long Island currently.
  • Potential Benefits: The project aims to provide renewable energy to power approximately 500,000 homes, contributing to the state’s goal of zero-emission electricity by 2040.
  • Empire Wind 2: A planned second phase of this project appears to also be paused indefinitely due to the recent federal executive order.

We recognize the broad interest and strong opinions for this project and will continue to monitor developments closely. We remain committed to keeping you informed and advocating for the interests and concerns of Point Lookout residents.
