The Civic Board has been collaborating with our partners at the Town of Hempstead to see several projects around the Point brought to completion in the coming months. See below for details:

Stockade Fence Replacement along Ocean Blvd:

  • Town Employees have begun replacing the stockade wood beach fencing along Ocean Blvd. The project will extend from the east end of Ocean Blvd and proceed west. The town is projecting completion prior to Memorial Day.
  • As part of the fence replacement, the brush area to the west of Pavillion will be remediated, the invasive Trees of Heaven will be removed (They attract the spotted lantern flies). Civic is looking to replace these trees with native Pitch Pines this upcoming fall.

Flooding/Water Buildup Remediation at the Park & Mineola Avenue

  • This issue will require long term planning and funding to completely eliminate this issue. In the meantime, Civic and TOH have collaborated on the following “band-aid” solutions to hopefully reduce the problem:
  • The field to the west of the Community Garden will be excavated to divert water buildup off of the parkinglot and Lido Blvd.
  • Installation of a 200ft perforated drainage pipe along the same area to facilitate quicker drainage of stormwater buildup.
  • More long-term solutions are being discussed for the future. Civic is in communication with Town and State officials to have a larger remediation project included in future capital funding that can fully eliminate drainage issues.

Sinkhole/Drywell Failure at Beach Shower

  • TOH anticipates having the drywell sinkhole repaired prior to Memorial Day Weekend.

Eliminated Illegal Vehicular Traffic in the park east of Mineola Avenue

  • Large Boulders will be placed at the south Mineola Ave. entrance (next to the Rev House). This will allow pedestrians and Public Safety atv’s access, but prevent cars from accessing the inlet area going forward.

South Sidewalk repair/replacement along Ocean Blvd:

  • In the coming weeks, TOH will be replacing sections of sidewalk along south Ocean Blvd. They will be prioritizing the most dilapidated sections as funding allows. This will continue into the future as more funding becomes available.

Playground Improvements

  • A Fresh layer of Fibar will be placed on the surface of the playground. Civic is exploring long term project funding for possible astroturf surface at the playground to improve safety and cleanliness.

Curb Cut at Town Park Entrance by the Deli:

  • TOH will install a bike/wheelchair curb cut to replace the tall curb at the entrance to Town Park by the Deli.

Beach / Park Water Fountains:

  • New Water Fountains and Filtered Bottle Fillers will be installed before Memorial Day weekend.

We want to thank our partners at the Town of Hempstead. Special thanks to TOH Parks Jay Podolski and his crew…..and Town of Hempstead Councilman Chris Carini and Supervisor Don Clavin for their support seeing these projects coming to fruition.

Also big thanks to Ed Wengler and Mary Goldberg, who’s coordination with TOH and work of the Park and Beach committees has facilitated many of these projects getting going.
