Many Point Lookout residents wonder what the Civic Association is all about, and what the organization does. In 2016 the PLCA worked closely with the Army Corps of Engineers to coordinate the extensive, multi-year project to reinforce and extend our jetties, to construct a large seawall from the southern tip of Mineola Avenue to the junction of the Inwood jetty, to add additional groins at the Point Lookout Town Park, and to map out the timeline and plans for construction of an enlarged continuous dune from Point Lookout at its eastern starting point all the way to Atlantic Beach. In 2017, to date, the PLCA has continued to work closely with the Army Corps to plan for the replacement of the Gardner Pavilion with a similarly designed new and safe sun shelter to sit atop the new dune line, providing a pleasant gathering spot for residents who cannot, or do not wish to, spend time on the beach itself, as well as to provide a focal point for town events.
The Civic Association has always hosted, and continues to host, the popular Welcome to Summer party at the beach, sponsors multiple summer movie evenings for residents, and organizes and manages the annual Labor Day weekend’s Children’s Day races, which has grown from the traditional swimming and running races to a day-long festival with food, rides, and the summer farewell to Mary Beth’s Ice Cream truck. In addition, the Civic Association hosts the Halloween Pumpkin Walk, a fall tradition in town for children and adults alike.
This year the Civic Association undertook a new, significant community project, coordinating construction and design of the Community Garden adjacent to the new playground and the baseball fields. A series of speed bumps was purchased and installed by the Civic Association inside the ballfield gates to improve the safety of our residents and their children who are enjoying all that the park has to offer.
In addition to the activities that are visible to all, as detailed above, the Civic Association works consistently with local and county officials to improve police enforcement of our 15 mph speed limit, to improve the traffic and parking problems made more critical as our restaurants and businesses have gained popularity with both townspeople and those visiting from outside of Point Lookout, and to make newer residents more aware of the speed restrictions in town. Further, the Civic Association met this past week with Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, Public Safety and officials within the Town of Hempstead Parks and Recreation Department to speak about how to keep our community and citizens safe and our environment clean. The Beach Committee of the PLCA works closely with the supervisor of the beach gate attendants, and has reinforced the need to check beach tags consistently and for all wishing to enter the beach, and has re-emphasized the importance of diligent attention on the part of all gate attendants, particularly on the weekends. Additional measures to safeguard the community will be rolled out in the near future. This summer the Civic Association will coordinate early morning maintenance of the walkways and common areas of the beach, attending to litter, sand covered walkways and to ensuring that those trying to enter the beach area prior to the start of the gate attendants’ official day will be required to show proper beach tags in order to gain entry to the beach.
The Zoning Committee of the Civic Association works with the Town of Hempstead and with homeowners requesting variances from the Building Department, representing the interests of Point Lookout residents within the context of published Building Department and FEMA guidelines. Other committees remain engaged consistently in efforts to improve the quality of life and the quality of our environment for the benefit of Point Lookout’s residents, both today and in the future.
