We have recently observed an increase in the number of deceased birds in our area. Recent reporting from News 12 indicates that groups of dead birds spotted across Long Island may be linked to avian flu, and state officials are advising the public to avoid any contact with sick or deceased wildlife.

As a precautionary public health measure, we ask that residents do not touch or handle any dead birds they may encounter and to keep children and pets away.

In most cases, it is best to avoid contact and allow nature to take its course.

However, if removal is necessary (e.g., on personal property, playgrounds, or other high-traffic areas), residents may contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways at 516-431-9200 for guidance on safe handling and removal.

Additionally, during this time of year, it is common to spot seals resting near the rocks or along our beaches and inlet shores. The New York State DEC reminds residents that these seals are often simply resting and should not be approached. Please maintain a safe distance, keep pets away, and avoid disturbing them.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our community safe.
